About

Carl Groombridge.
A lifelong adventure in animals.

Every great zoological organisation has that one person who was clearly destined for this career from the start. For us, that person is Carl.

A childhood where 'pets' meant… everything

Carl grew up in a quiet Cambridgeshire village in a large, animal-loving family. By age five he was already caring for chameleons, bullfrogs and hognose snakes. When he reached secondary school an iguana became the centre of his universe — his supportive parents converted an entire room into a miniature animal sanctuary.

From pet-shop prodigy to professional keeper

At 17 Carl was trusted to run the local pet shop while completing his BTEC in Animal Care. By 19 he was an Animal Technician at the Cambridge College of Agriculture and Horticulture, and by 21 the Animal Care Manager at a Berkshire college.

Building a leading zoological education centre

In 2005 Carl took on the challenge of transforming a Bedfordshire college's animal centre into a cutting-edge zoological education hub. The centre achieved a full zoo licence, BIAZA status, a unique Amazon-themed biome, and offered courses from Level 1 to Level 6 — training students alongside ZSL, Linton Zoo, The Blue Cross, Lantra and Landex.

Expertise across the zoological world

Aquatics, domestic species, exotic and zoological species (his speciality), zookeeper training, junior keeper programmes and conservation education. Carl is an affiliate for the Chartered Institute of Further Education and has worked with the CITES team at London Heathrow's Animal Reception Centre to rehome illegally imported species.

Innovation, awards and professional growth

Carl pioneered the use of QR codes in education, designed health-and-safety traffic-light systems, and holds Grade 1 teaching observations. He's a member of the Chartered Association for Further Education and continues to expand his expertise through the European Serpent Conference, British Chelonia Symposium and specialist husbandry training.

A family ethos at the heart of everything

Carl is a devoted father of two daughters. He married Elaine at Whipsnade Zoo in 2007, surrounded by the animals and environments they love. Today the family travels the world together visiting zoological institutions, wildlife centres and conservation projects.
